NYC commuter survival guide by a fellow student!

SOURCE
Being an NYC intern and having to commute everyday, or even twice a week can be a drag; read Nick's article on NYCreative Interns website for a survival guide, it may help you!!
Domino CLOCK

New product designed by seattle based group called CarbonDesignGroup
>is a set of three larger-than-life dominoes equipped with articulating "dots" that flip back-and-forth between black and white to keep time.
>They hang on the wall or stand free, serving as a sculptural piece and a semi-abstract time keeper.
>This clock is the outcome of what is termed a "Passion Project" at Carbon Design - internal projects taken on to fuel the creative teams without typical client constraints.
"While the aesthetic of the piece was defined in advance, the team solved a number of complex engineering challenges, including developing a custom actuator to flip the dots from black to white in a pleasing, silent fashion and embedding low-cost wireless technology that maintains a clean design."

Exceptional Person: Tyler Oakley
Tyler Oakley is my exceptional person because of the fact that since I've known him, he has become quite the celebrity. He has excelled in so many different fields, networking with thousands of people through youtube, facebook, twitter, etc. I aspire to be like him because of his persistence and his ability to never give up. He puts himself out there and has no limits, and continues to reach out to the public. Tyler is most widely known for his youtube career, and was hired by the university he attends, Michigan State University, to speak to students about how to deal with internships. Since I've known tyler I've always looked up to him because of his ability to reach out to people. In high school he was friends with everyone. I didn't know a single person who hadn't heard of him. Now, I look at his facebook fan page and I see people from hofstra being fans of his....which is INSANE to me. The best way to reach out to the public and become a successful person in this world is to take hold of the resources given to us. Facebook, coroflot, youtube, twitter, districtlines, etcccc! It's a blessing in disguise and Tyler has made sure to take full advantage of technology. It's not just about the technology though, Tyler is a people person. He meets people all the time, across the world. Putting yourself out there will only further your networks and get you where you want to be in life. I will continue to follow his career and I can't wait to see where he takes it!!

Life: Post Graduate
"My Journey & Lessons from Graduation until NOW"
Victoria Monsul
How do we become what we are?
-Grew up in a creative atmosphere, so that's why she went to a design school. She wasn't interested in math or anything of that sort.
-Be Authentic. How can you be original? Be passionate with what you're doing, that distinguishes candidates. Be yourself. Maintaining integrity. Try not to get your ego in the way of things, be humble.
-Be selective. The traits of the people around you, rub off on you. "You are who you hang out with" Don't be in an environment where people are going to affect you in a bad way, be with people who inspire you. "pushing the envelope...create better ideas.
- Benefits of "my" degree. She's polish and greek.
-Gained confidence by being able to take criticism, not always hear something good, take action. Interested to see how people responded to her. You can be different people, experiment, a time and a place for everyone (something anna akbari talked about in her guest lecture).
-Advice for interviewing: She showed up very REAL, very raw, even if you're not perfect, that means more room for improvement, which is good for an employer.
-Creative exploration is very beneficial. Worked a lot in super 8 film, weird chemical experiments, newsletters...share these ideas, started a radio station...community, experimentation. Explore. Try out different things, make mistakes.
-At the end of the day, when you do finish school, it benefits, but once you have your interview, it's an "organic" process.
-Your first impression of people is very quick. When you walk into a room, people judge you based off appearance at first hand...it's in out human nature.
-Constantly re-invent yourself. LIVE YOUR LIFE. Push boundaries
-Don't get arrested, but "see the red and blue lights and then hit the road"
-Personal and professional, is based off connections....a relationship
-Meet people you don't know. Be proactive.
-Politics exist everywhere
-Very important to know how to fail.
-Your thoughts can become creations. Rid yourself of negativity. Rid yourself of pessimism
"If you're not failing everyday, you're not setting your goals high enough"
"You will get a job offer on how you view yourself"
Position yourself on how you want to be
-Takes time to get to where you're going
-Stay proactive with different people.
-BE PERSISTENT

Plot Overview
L eonato, a kindly, respectable nobleman, lives in the idyllic Italian town of Messina. Leonato shares his house with his lovely young daughter, Hero, his playful, clever niece, Beatrice, and his elderly brother, Antonio. As the play begins, Leonato prepares to welcome some friends home from a war. The friends include Don Pedro, a prince who is a close friend of Leonato, and two fellow soldiers: Claudio, a well-respected young nobleman, and Benedick, a clever man who constantly makes witty jokes, often at the expense of his friends. Don John, Don Pedro’s illegitimate brother, is part of the crowd as well. Don John is sullen and bitter, and makes trouble for the others.
When the soldiers arrive at Leonato’s home, Claudio quickly falls in love with Hero. Meanwhile, Benedick and Beatrice resume the war of witty insults that they have carried on with each other in the past. Claudio and Hero pledge their love to one another and decide to be married. To pass the time in the week before the wedding, the lovers and their friends decide to play a game. They want to get Beatrice and Benedick, who are clearly meant for each other, to stop arguing and fall in love. Their tricks prove successful, and Beatrice and Benedick soon fall secretly in love with each other.
But Don John has decided to disrupt everyone’s happiness. He has his companion Borachio make love to Margaret, Hero’s serving woman, at Hero’s window in the darkness of the night, and he brings Don Pedro and Claudio to watch. Believing that he has seen Hero being unfaithful to him, the enraged Claudio humiliates Hero by suddenly accusing her of lechery on the day of their wedding and abandoning her at the altar. Hero’s stricken family members decide to pretend that she died suddenly of shock and grief and to hide her away while they wait for the truth about her innocence to come to light. In the aftermath of the rejection, Benedick and Beatrice finally confess their love to one another. Fortunately, the night watchmen overhear Borachio bragging about his crime. Dogberry and Verges, the heads of the local police, ultimately arrest both Borachio and Conrad, another of Don John’s followers. Everyone learns that Hero is really innocent, and Claudio, who believes she is dead, grieves for her.
Leonato tells Claudio that, as punishment, he wants Claudio to tell everybody in the city how innocent Hero was. He also wants Claudio to marry Leonato’s “niece”—a girl who, he says, looks much like the dead Hero. Claudio goes to church with the others, preparing to marry the mysterious, masked woman he thinks is Hero’s cousin. When Hero reveals herself as the masked woman, Claudio is overwhelmed with joy. Benedick then asks Beatrice if she will marry him, and after some arguing they agree. The joyful lovers all have a merry dance before they celebrate their double wedding.

Anna Akbari
Anna Akbari is a multi-faceted businesswoman who has made herself out to be quite the designer. She is a sociologist, consultant, writer, entrepreneur, etc. Anna is not afraid to wear different masks and actually encourages other people to try to live in someone else's shoes for a day. She believes that in the design world authenticity is irrelevant. Anna believes that creating an image for yourself is important, giving yourself an identity. She told us in her speech not to underestimate the audience, and to ask yourself , "do they believe it?" Anna believes that you can make so many different friends just by skewing your image depending on their demographic. She has dressed up as a homeless person, prostitute, tourist, preppy girl, and wore a veil. She also talked to us about how sites such as facebook, blogs, myspace, etc gives you a certain image. She reminded us that it is important to think, write, and meet people. She is a successful business person who encourages people to go out in the world and become familiar with all kinds of people.

class notes 10/8/10
Pick out a Shakespeare play for next class, have your sound experiment ready, and blogs/tweets up to date.
Goals: Create the research and presentation for a short, video clip with visuals from
specified sources, typography and original audio track, evoking one of
Shakespeare’s plays.
Assignment Two
Shakespeare in 4-7 seconds
Software
FinalCut, SoundStudio or Audacity, Photoshop
Procedure
- Goal is to create a 4-7 second video “animatic” evoking one of Shakespeare’s plays.
- Use research on the web to select a play by Shakespeare.
- In your blog, post three or more essential themes in the play.
- From those you follow on Twitter, select one tweet that seems to fit with one of these themes.
- Select visuals that will comprise the raw material for the video portion of your project from these sources:
-One still images from the web that helps evoke the chosen play (do not use images from a production of the play). One image posted on any of your FB friends’ pages.
(When selecting the images note that close-ups and details work best.)
-One short video sequence from any source on youtube NOT from a well-known source like a professional movie, music video, commercial, etc. (Download the video at home using online apps or at school by shooting the video directly off the screen with a Flip video cam available from the lab aid.)
- In Photoshop, “stylize”” the web and FB images as needed to best evoke the play. Do the same for the video in Final Cut.
- Crop all images and set up your video file to 720x480 px, 72 dpi.
- For the sound, create one sound with your own voice and alter as appropriate in Sound Studio or Audacity. Combine with one-piece of unknown) instrumental music.
- Combine the still images and video with the mixed sound and a short excerpt (one to three words) from the Tweet text in Final Cut to evoke the selected play.
- Post the completed video to youtube and link from your blog.
Look @ facebook for a photo!! Find a youtube video (segment) that would correlate with the symbols of the play....leaves in the wind... Also find a web image...that goes along with the theme.

Traditional vs. Change

Some products choose to stay traditional with their brands to keep their loyal customers. Because coke has been around longer than Pepsi (coke since1886 developed by John Pemberton, Pepsi was invented in1898 by Caleb Bradham), they've always tried to stay the original "coke" drink. In recent years, pepsi has decided to go the "change" route, and create a new look for their brand, which targets a younger audience. Pepsi has always hired celebrities to appear in their commercials such as Britney Spears, Shakira, Beyonce, Pink, etc. Coke on the other hand has had a few celebrities in their commercials, but for the most part, it's all about tradition. When I was little and my mom came home with a new hairstyle I used to cry because I didn't think it looked like her anymore. I was so used to her original hairstyle, I didn't want to have to get use to change.

Life without a tv...

The Importance of Being a Social Butterfly

When I was in high school I was friends with this guy named Tyler Oakley. Since I've been out of high school he has made himself out to be quite the celebrity. It all started when he became a part of youtube in the fall of '07...as of now he has 82,952 subscribers. He is now in contact with the famous blogger Perez hilton... according to Tyler's facebook he and Perez have texted each other in the past. Perez even surprised Tyler by getting him a backstage pass to meet the lovely Lady Gaga. Tyler has a fan page on facebook where 18,759 people are "fans" of his. He has a district lines website where he sells t-shirts and other merchandise. On facebook he has actually posted pictures of different fans wearing his t-shirts and I think that's a good way that he connects with his fans, and gains more buyers. You name it, he has it. A tumblr, facebook, twitter, two youtube accounts...he is a part of another channel called thefiveawesomegays which has 50,512 subscribers. A non-profit organization called The Trevor Project asked him to speak at different colleges and was able to get an internship with them in Los Angeles, California. Tyler has traveled to the world to different places such as Tokyo, Europe, and all across the United States. Not only that, he is employed by the University he attends, Michigan State University to make "how to" videos. How you should be prepared to go into an interview, how to make a resume, etc. He has made a name for himself and I'm interested to see where he takes his success in the future.
